A deal was signed at the Mesko plant in Skarzysko-Kamienna (south-central Poland) on Thursday for 820 122mm Feniks missiles with increased range for the Polish army in a transaction valued at PLN 25 million (EUR 5.75 million).

Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said at the signing ceremony that the order for the Feniks missiles will reinforce the capability of the Armed Forces as they have a range almost twice that of the missiles used to date. The ammunition will be usable with the WR-Langusta, RM-70 and BM-21 launchers.

"It is important for the Polish defence industry to develop," Blaszczak said. "That is indispensable in the process of development of the Polish Armed Forces."

The defence minister added that the value of contracts from the armed forces to Polish defence industry stood last year at PLN 3.96 billion (EUR 911 million). "That's the value of contracts on the Ministry of Defence agenda given to the Polish arms industry," Blaszczak said.

Commenting on the contract with Mesko, part of the Polish Armaments group (PGZ), Blaszczak said there would be more such deals. "This is confirmation of the capability of the Mesko plants to produce such missiles," he said. "This is the first phase. (...) It is an introduction to further orders."

The Technical Modernisation Plan for the Polish Armed Forces until 2026 is valued at PLN 185 billion (EUR 42.6 billion). (PAP)
