Krzysztof Czabanski elected National Media Council head
Krzysztof Czabanski was elected president of the newly-formed National Media Council (RMN), PAP was told by RMN member Joanna Lichocka of the ruling Law and Justice (PiS). The Council's next meeting will be held on Tuesday.
On Tuesday the Council will meet with managements of Polish national television, radio and press agency PAP to hear reports on the condition of the media companies, according to Lichocka.
Czabanski was elected at the Council's first meeting arranged by the Sejm (lower house) speaker.
Czabanski was supported by four members of the five-member body. A member put forward by the main opposition party Civic Platform voted against.
Officially established on July 7, the five-seat council is appointed by the Sejm (3 seats) and the president (2 seats); the presidential nominations are chosen from candidates fielded by the two biggest opposition parties.
Krzysztof Czabanski, a deputy culture minister and the government's envoy for ongoing public media reforms, was elected to the council in mid-July, along with two other ruling party MPs Elzbieta Kruk and Joanna Lichocka.
The new council is planned to oversee the reliability of the public media and coordinate their cooperation. The council will also appoint the management boards of public TV and radio and the Polish Press Agency. (PAP)
