Polish parliament restarts proceedings, takes break until Thursday
The lower house of Poland's parliament restarted its proceedings on Wednesday evening after a full day of talks and negotiations in an attempt to come out of a parliamentary crisis which erupted on December 16.
Sejm Speaker Marek Kuchcinski announced the opening of the 34th sitting of the Chamber and minutes later declared a break in the sitting until Thursday morning.
A group of MPs from the biggest opposition party, the Civic Platform, continued their protest by standing around the speakers' podium.
On Dec. 16 two opposition parties started a protest during a Sejm sitting after the exclusion of an opposition MP from the debate by the house speaker amid a heated exchange over planned restrictions on media coverage in parliament. The debate was moved to a side room, where a vote was held on the 2017 budget. The opposition argued that the vote was flawed as there was no quorum.
Kuchcinski has been assuring critics that the vote was attended by the legally required number of MPs and that it was thus valid with all MPs free to take part.(PAP)
