One miner dead after tremor hits Polish coal mine
One miner was killed and eleven were injured after an underground tremor occurred on Monday morning in the Marcel mine in Radlin, southern Poland, according to information from the Polish Mining Group (PGG), the owner of the mine.
Ewa Grudniok, the spokesperson for PGG, told PAP that the tremor occurred 800 metres below the surface at approximately 3:06am, registering a magnitude of 3.15 on the Richter scale. At the time of the incident, there were 29 miners in the affected area.
A 34-year-old individual has been confirmed dead. Also, 11 miners were taken to hospital, with four of them in critical condition.
Bartosz Kepa, the interim president of PGG, reported that an evacuation was currently in progress.
The accident in Radlin follows the methane explosion in the Szczyglowice mine last week, which claimed the lives of three miners.
Marzena Czarnecka, the industry minister, offered her condolences to the families of the victims via the X platform.
"I would like to express my sincerest condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to those injured," she wrote. "I would also like to thank the rescue teams for your professionalism and courage."
In 2024, three rock bursts occurred in Polish mines, leading to the deaths of five individuals and injuries to 43 miners. (PAP)
