Poland lifts border controls with Slovakia

The Polish interior minister has announced that the temporary checks on the Slovak border would be discontinued of as of Sunday.

Poland first imposed the controls on its border with Slovakia on October 4 and extended them several times to stem the number of migrants crossing into Poland from its neighbour in the south.

According to the interior ministry, the situation on the Balkan route has stabilised, and the threat of illegal migration has subsided, thus the decision to remove the controls as of March 3.

"Within the framework of cross-border cooperation, the migration situation will be monitored on an ongoing basis and, in the event of an increase in the threat, control activities at the border may be resumed," the interior ministry wrote.

Under the previous regulation, the border with Slovakia could be crossed only at designated crossings, and an ID or a passport were required. (PAP)
