Poland stands to lose around PLN 8 billion (EUR 1.9 bln) as a result of the 15-percent tariffs imposed on EU imports by US President Donald Trump starting in August, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has reported.
"American tariffs on European goods have now become a reality," Tusk wrote on the X platform on Tuesday. "They are at half the amount proposed by President Trump in April, yet there is no cause for celebration."
"According to preliminary estimates, Poland could incur losses of around PLN 8 billion (the initial threat was PLN 15 billion). The repercussions will be significant on both sides of the Atlantic, but a difficult trade agreement is preferable to a senseless tariff war between allies," he continued.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Trump announced on Sunday that they had reached a trade agreement that reduced the previously announced 30-percent tariffs on most European products shipped to the US to 15 percent.
Trump also said that the EU would procure US military equipment worth hundreds of billions of dollars, although he did not specify the exact amount.
He further reported the EU had agreed to purchase US energy worth USD 750 billion and to invest an additional USD 600 billion in the US beyond the current level. (PAP)tus/ao/han/aj/jch
