President wants to tighten law on Polish citizenship
President Karol Nawrocki has filed with the lower house a draft amendment to the law on Polish citizenship aimed to prolong the necessary period to apply for it, the Polish President's Office has reported.
The draft prolongs the minimum period of continuous, legal residence in Poland from three years to 10 years (with a permanent or long-term EU resident permit) in order to obtain Polish citizenship.
"The aim of the draft is to create conditions for fuller integration of foreigners before they are granted Polish citizenship," reads the justification of the draft.
According to the authors of the draft, the three-year period of continuous, legal residence in Poland required now to obtain Polish citizenship is "among the shortest in the EU," and, as such, does not give enough time to achieve a B1 Polish language level, understand culture and adapt to social and legal conditions.
The draft was sent to the Sejm, lower house of parliament, on Monday. (PAP)
