Following the call, Tusk reported that there were "certain signs" which aligned with his intuition that suggested "perhaps a freeze in the conflict... is closer than further away."

The prime minister noted that Friday marked the deadline for the ultimatum issued by US President Donald Trump to Russia, demanding an end to its war in Ukraine. "President Zelensky remains very cautious, yet still optimistic," he said.

Tusk added that the Ukrainian side was "very keen" for European nations, including Poland, to be involved in the formulation of the future ceasefire and subsequent peace agreement.

Last week, Trump shortened the deadline given to Moscow to achieve a peace accord, initially set for 50 days, to August 8; failure to comply will result in the US imposing new stringent sanctions against Russia and its crude oil trading partners.(PAP)
