Chopin 2025: Piano Concerto in F minor is lyrical and poetic - William Yang
After his performance on the second day of final auditions for the Chopin Competition on Sunday, pianist William Yang (USA) said that Fryderyk Chopin's Piano Concerto in F minor is lyrical, poetic and as beautiful as any of the composer's other works.
Yang told reporters later that day he felt the same way as after any other performance. "It's always a kind of relief. I try to remember only the good moments and quickly forget what could have gone better," he said.
Asked why he had chosen the Piano Concerto in F minor, Op. 21, he said that the finals of Chopin Competitions were usually dominated by the Piano Concerto in E minor, Op. 11.
"I don't know why that happens. The Concerto in F minor also presents challenges for the pianist and is as beautiful as any other piece by Fryderyk Chopin. It may be more lyrical and poetic in style," he explained, adding that he wanted to express his personality with this concert.
Eleven pianists from seven countries are performing in the finals of the 19th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, which runs from Saturday to Monday: Piotr Alexewicz, representing Poland, Kevin Chen (Canada), David Khrikuli (Georgia), Shiori Kuwahara (Japan), Tianyou Li (China), Eric Lu (United States), Tianyao Lyu (China), Vincent Ong (Malaysia), Miyu Shindo (Japan), Zitong Wang (China), and William Yang (United States).
