Chopin 2025: Preludes are kaleidoscope of feelings, Polish pianist says
The cycle of Chopin's 24 preludes is a kaleidoscope of all emotions, Piotr Alexewicz, a Polish pianist participating in this year's International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, said after performing in the 2nd stage of the event.
Alexewicz is one of four Polish contestants who have qualified to the second stage. During his performance on Thursday, he played all 24 preludes from Opus 28.
Reflecting on how his interpretation of the preludes has evolved over the last four years, given that he was also a participant in the 2021 edition of the competition, Alexewicz said: "Each time, they are different preludes. When I step onto the stage, I don't really know what they will be like, because music is dynamic. It cannot be fully planned. Music develops within a person, especially music as rich as the preludes. After all, they are a kaleidoscope of all feelings."
He went on to say that the preludes constitute a masterpiece for every pianist.
"This cycle is incredibly constructed, it encompasses everything. The beauty lies in the fact that you can look at it differently depending on the time or your mood," Alexewicz said.
Forty pianists from 14 countries have advanced to the Warsaw event's second stage.
The 19th edition of the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, organised by Poland's Fryderyk Chopin Institute, runs from October 2 to 23.
