Chopin 2025: UK's Jacky Zhang performs first in 2nd stage of competition

Jacky Zhang, a British pianist participating in this year's International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, said after performing as the first contestant in the 2nd stage of the event that he cannot help humming while playing.

The second-stage auditions began on Thursday and will last until October 12. Participants will perform 40-50-minute recitals, the programme of which must include selected preludes and one of the following polonaises: Andante spianato and Grand Polonaise in E flat major, Op. 22; Polonaise in F sharp minor, Op. 44; Polonaise in A flat major, Op. 53, or both polonaises from Op. 26, as well as any other piece or pieces by Fryderyk Chopin.

When asked by reporters after his performance which piece had been the most difficult for him, Zhang replied that at this point there were only difficult pieces.

He elaborated that one can work very hard on one's polonaises and preludes, yet still not be able to play them perfectly.

Zhang, who hums while playing, said that he had tried to break this habit, but could not always stop himself.

He recalled that the first Chopin piece he had learned was the Nocturne in B major, Op. 62 No. 1, which he performed during the first stage of the competition.

Forty pianists from 14 countries have advanced to the second stage.

The 19th edition of the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, organised by Poland's Fryderyk Chopin Institute, runs from October 2 to 23.
