EC sues Poland over lack of updated energy and climate plan
The European Commission (EC), the EU's executive arm, has filed a complaint against Poland with the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) over the country's failure to present an updated version of the national energy and climate plan.
"Today, the European Commission decided to refer Poland to the Court of Justice of the European Union for failing to submit its national long-term strategy in line with the Regulation (EU) 2018/1999 on the Governance of the Energy Union and Climate Action," the body wrote on Wednesday.
According to EU regulations, all member states were obliged to send their updated plans to the EC by June 30, 2024.
Before filing its complaint with the CJEU, the EC launched an EU law infringement procedure against Poland.
Polish Energy Minister Grzegorz Motyka announced recently that the National Recovery Plan for Energy and Climate (KPEiK) will be finalised by the end of 2025. Its draft was first presented a year ago, in October, and since then its content has been subject to revisions and consultations.
When commenting on the EC's announcement on Wednesday, Motyka assured that Warsaw was not at risk of penalties from the CJEU.
"We are engaged in a comprehensive discussion with the EC. The Commission is aware that the specifics of our energy system, as well as the war in Ukraine, have led to certain delays," the minister added. (PAP)
