Twenty pianists qualify for 3rd stage of Warsaw's Chopin Competition
Twenty pianists, including three Poles, have advanced to the third stage of the 19th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition following a decision of the jury chaired by Garrick Ohlsson.
Ohlsson said on Sunday evening that the second round was long and intensive. He expressed excitement over the upcoming performances, given the high standard demonstrated so far. The director of the competition and the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, Dr Artur Szklener, read out the names of the pianists who had qualified for the third stage.
Among them were three Poles: Piotr Alexewicz, Piotr Pawlak, and Yehuda Prokopowicz. Six pianists from Poland advanced to the third stage of the 18th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in 2021, and three Polish artists reached the third stage of the 17th Chopin Competition in 2015.
This year, the third stage will also feature Kevin Chen (Canada), Yang (Jack) Gao (China), Eric Guo (Canada), David Khrikuli (Georgia), Shiori Kuwahara (Japan), Hyo Lee (South Korea), Hyuk Lee (South Korea), Tianyou Li (China), Xiaoxuan Li (China), Eric Lu (United States), Tianyao Lyu (China), Vincent Ong (Malaysia), Miyu Shindo (Japan), Tomoharu Ushida (Japan), Zitong Wang (China), Yifan Wu (China) and William Yang (United States).
The third-stage auditions will begin on Tuesday at 10am and will last until October 16. Participants will perform one-hour recitals, the programme of which must include selected sonata and a cycle of mazurkas, as well as any other piece or pieces by Fryderyk Chopin.
The 19th edition of the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, organised by Poland's Fryderyk Chopin Institute, runs from October 2 to October 23.
