We've worked out a good compromise, and Great Britain has many opportunities for a smooth exit from the EU, said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in Brussels after the conclusion of a special EU summit on Brexit.

Early Thursday morning, 27 EU countries and Great Britain agreed to postpone Brexit until October 31, 2019. British Prime Minister Theresa May had requested that the date of departure be postponed until the end of June. Some member states were ready to accept the proposal of the head of the European Council, Donald Tusk, which assumed an extension of the Brexit process until spring 2020. This date, however, was rejected by France.

"We did everything that we could to find a date that would be far away enough to give Prime Minister May a chance to resolve this Brexit impasse. We were successful,” PM Mateusz Morawiecki told reporters after the meeting.

The prime minister stated that now the most likely scenario is the exit of Great Britain based on the exit agreement voted by the House of Commons. He stipulated that if this country decided to stay in the EU, as he said, was his wish, then Poland would be very delighted.

He noted that, at this stage, an option to renegotiate the exit agreement is not being considered. "We do not anticipate changes to the exit contract. It was very well negotiated by Michel Barnier (EU chief negotiator for Brexit - PAP)."

Morawiecki also pointed out that the consequence of the decision made at the summit is to keep in force what is most important for Poland, that is, a guarantee of the rights of Poles in Great Britain. (PAP)
