Hundreds of Polish farmers and unionists set off from the central Zamkowy Square in Warsaw at noon on Friday in protest against the Green Deal, the European plan to make agriculture more environmentally-friendly.

The demonstration under the slogan 'Away with Green Deal' has been organised by the Solidarity trade union and its farmers' branch.

The protesters have been joined by top politicians from the current main opposition party, Law and Justice (PiS), including its leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski.

However, their presence can be seen as opportunistic, as it was during the time when PiS was in power that the Green Deal was introduced.

Kaczynski recently blamed the European Commission (EC) for introducing the plan and said the PiS government had protested in vain against it, however PiS has had its own commissioner for agriculture in the EC who oversaw the introduction of the scheme. (PAP)
