Auto giant Fiat Chrysler Automobiles will invest EUR 165 million in its Polish plant to produce new hybrid and electric vehicles.
The money will go into the production of vehicles for the company’s Jeep, Fiat and Alfa Romeo brands at its plant in the southern Polish city of Tychy.
"New production possibilities based on the most modern technology mean that fully electric and hybrid cars will appear in Poland. We are attracting investment even in a time of crisis," Mateusz Morawiecki, the prime minister, wrote on his Facebook page. "I hope this is just the beginning of good economic news that another year will bring for Poland!"
Jaroslaw Gowin, a deputy prime minister, heralded the news as evidence of Poland’s good reputation as an investment destination
"Modern, hybrid and electric cars of the Jeep, Fiat and Alfa Romeo marques will start to leave the Tychy factory in 2022," Gowin wrote on Twitter. "The investment, worth PLN 755 million (EUR 165 mln - PAP) with the prospect of multiple increases in expenditure, is cast-iron proof of the trust the markets place in Poland."
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles wrote that the investment will involve the rebuilding and modernisation of its plant which will take several years.
"The aim is to start serial production of the first of three new car models for the group’s brands in the second half of 2022," the company wrote.
"Preparations have already begun," it continued. "The announced models of Jeep, Fiat and Alfa Romeo cars are technologically advanced models based on a new concept of mobility." (PAP)
